Don Mohidin transitioned peacefully on January 18 at the VA Hospital in San Francisco. After dealing with congestive heart failure for 5 years, Don was accepting of passing through the door of death, a sacred threshold on his journey.

Don was born in Chapra, Bihar, India to Gulam Mohidin and Mary Schoonmaker Mohidin. When three months old, Don traveled with his mother and three siblings to the USA.

Overcoming childhood difficulties and challenges, Don grew to become an independent, gentle and loving person embracing life fully. At 19, Don joined the Army becoming an audio specialist. Don's professional path included working on federal government projects, National Oceanic Society research, and cable television technical projects. His passion was providing technical sound expertise for musicians.

Spending most of his life on the East Coast, Don returned to San Francisco in 2007 where he had lived in 1977. In San Francisco, Don found joy with the Gay Buddhist Fellowship continuing his study and meditation practice. Here he formed many friendships that were joyful and spiritually stimulating.

Preceding Don in death were his parents, a partner, David Lewis and soul mate, Thom Hickam. Surviving him are immediate family from the USA, sisters Mary Alexander, Martha Mohidin, and brother Lee Mohidin, nephews James and Scott Alexander and niece Sitara (Tara) Hultman.

Extended family members from Kashmir include brothers Sadiq, Javid and Hussain Mohidin, sisters Hajira Khan, Mumtaz Mohidin and Halima Mohidin Tiffany. Additional survivors are their children Muzaffar, Yasmin, Shamim, Farida, Huma, Mohsin, Anum, Manzoor, Rubina, Ahmed, Arif, Ifan and Alexander. Surviving close friends include Ricky Neighbors, Phebe Cress, Chrystal Kahala Johnson, Tom Nolan and Larry Friesen.

A memorial will held on Sunday, March 28 at 1:30 p.m. in the Project Open Hand Building, 730 Polk Street, San Francisco.
